Why Do Mountain House #10 Cans Last Longer Than Pouches
We got a great question today from a customer about our Mountain House survival food.
The customer asked "Why do the Mountain House pouches only have a 4-5 year life, as opposed to the usual 20-30 year life for other mountain house products?"
When Mountain House creates the tins they flush out the oxygen using nitrogen and then add oxygen absorbers to reduce the amount of any remaining oxygen which causes food to spoil. The pouches are not put through this process and therefore have a shorter best before date.
For long term storage in a bunker/shelter we normally recommend the #10 tins over the pouches. If you are looking for something to put in a bug out bag or a hiking trip the pouches are normally the best option.
